Tidy Cats Breeze Pad Alternative Hack To Save You Money

I just want to start off and say I LOVE the Tidy Cats Breeze System. I switched from a regular litter box about 3 years ago and I will never go back to the barbaric clay litter system. This post is not totally about the Breeze system which I will not get too much into but I swear by it.

So, I wanted to point out that the Breeze system is a little expensive which I bit the bullet on but if I can save some money on pads then that would be great. I tried a gravel/small rock alternative to the pellets but that did not work very well. All I have to say is Japan makes a darn good Breeze pellet which is where they are all imported from. Kudos to you, Japan!

Anyway, so in the picture above you can see the size difference from the Breeze pad (Green outline) from the Dry Paw PupPee Pad. You will have to cut the Dry Paw PupPee Pad to the size of the Breeze pad and then I like to put the remaining piece to the right underneath it, just in case.

Dry Paw PupPee Pads are made by the company, The Fischer Group. They also make Delux Dry bed underpads. You can use either one for your Breeze system but the bed pads are a bit bigger, softer and more expensive than the Dry Paw PupPee Pads. The bed pads probably are closer to the Breeze Pad make and will absorb more over a longer period of time. So it's really up to you on how often you want/need to change your pads out. I usually leave my pads (Breeze) in for about a week and then change them with two cats. With the PupPee Pads I would probably leave them in for about 2-3 days before changing it out. Trust me, even with the more frequent changing you will have a bunch more to go through compared to the Breeze Pads. You could probably leave the bed pads in for 5-7 days just as long as the Breeze Pads before changing them. Remember, every cat is different and the amount of cats will change that. I have one very active box user and the other goes only 2-3 times a day.

This is the PupPee Pad after two pees. The extra piece of PupPee Pad I put under it didn't get wet at all. I will admit to you that I got scared feeling how thin the PupPee Pads were but these pads surprisingly absorb a good amount of liquid without leaking.

These are the Delux Dry bed pads. They are big enough to cut up and use as two pads.

You can buy the PupPee Pads directly from their site here: http://www.puppeepad.com/purchase/
It's $24 for a pack of 100 pads. Compare that to the Breeze Pads where it's now $7 for a pack of 4 pads.

You can also buy PupPee Pads directly from Amazon here: http://www.amazon.com/Dry-Puppy-Training-21x21-100ct/dp/B00V6IGMM0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1429878114&sr=8-1&keywords=dry+paw+puppy+pad+accurate+product+development

If you choose the Delux Dry bed pads you can buy from their site here: http://www.deluxdry.com/shop/
It's $39 for a pack of 60 or $69 for a pac of 120.  Either way you decide to go with this you will be saving a ton of money compared to the Breeze Pads.

You can also buy Delux Dry bed pads directly from Amazon herehttp://www.amazon.com/dp/B00UNRWIBE

Concluding this article, I would say go for this cheaper option if you are cash strapped. It's a totally positive alternative that works very well. You may not find a very good alternative on the pellets but these pee pads / bed pads are basically about the same quality for a lot less money.  Any questions? Let me know and I'll be happy to try and answer you the best I can. Thanks for stopping by!

  1. I have never heard of this! We've two cats and the litter box is the bane of existence! Thank you so much for sharing!

  2. While I don't have a cat, I think this is a great idea. I have a dog and I use pee pads in his dog run at night.

  3. I read on the Amazon comments that people are washing the pellets (take out the bottom tray, put the box in the shower with some soap, mix it around, rinse it off, put them on a cookie sheet to dry, and they are totally reusable. Also, a lot of folks were saying that the 6mm air pellets work really well and you can get 10,000 of them at Walmart for around $9, and they too are washable. The bag of pellets that came with my box was pretty skimpy, so I added in some pellets, and mixed it up a bit to fill the box a little more, and they work just fine. I plan on washing both the pellets and the air pellets and reusing them.

    1. What are air pellets? I've never heard of them. Now that I have solved the expensive pad problem, I am working on trying to get the pellet price down.

    2. Air pellets as in Air Soft Guns I assume. They are little round plastic balls the size of BB gun BBs. Sold at air soft stores and Wal-Mart or most hardware stores. Because they are plastic I'm wondering if they absorb (and never loose) the bad amonia cat urine smell though.

    3. I have tried the flat-bottomed glass beads you put in vases, very easy to wash & dry with a dedicated colander, but my cat wasn't crazy about them (I think because they were noisy), so I'm looking for something smaller (glass, not plastic).

Actually I may try the glass beads again because my cat has stopped scratching and trying to cover, so maybe they wouldn't be as noisy.

    4. The best price (currently 7-19-2017) I've found for Breeze Brand Pads is $1.05 per pad. You do have to buy 60 at a time. $62.99 for 60 pads. I just refuse to pay much more than that. Sellers are really ripping people off with these ridiculous prices.

      On Amazon...

  4. You can also use Ultra Absorb Pads on Amazon. They are specifically made for the Breeze Litter System; and work just as well as the Breeze pads; but they are much less expensive...$22.99 for the 22 pad bonus pack. I've tried all the generic brands for my system; because I also love the system...except for the price of the Breeze pads. The Ultra Absorb pads are the best I have found.

    1. Can you share a link to these pads for anyone who would like to try them out? Thanks

  5. I put the Amazon Smile link...same as Amazon; but Amazon donates a % of your purchase to the charity of your choice... https://smile.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Dpets&field-keywords=ultra+absorb+tidy+cat+pad+refills

The Ultra Absorb pads come in a 4 pack and a 22 pack. Also, if you read the questions, if you contact the seller and ask for a coupon to try them, they will send you one!

  6. As for a hack on the pellets, I buy a 40lb bag of Douglas Fir Pellets from Lowe's for around $5. They carry them year round since they are mainly used in pellet stoves for heat. They are 100% natural and used by horse owners all the time for bedding, hence why Lowe's carry them year round in my area. Mix a small amount at first, and each week add more until you are sure your cat will like them. They are odorless but my cat did not like a complete swap out, must good slow with change for him.

    1. Don't they get wet and expand?

      Delete
    2. Same question on expanding but also do they absorb odor and how often should they be changed? The Breeze pellets are good for about a month so if changing tree pellets every few days in the long run are you saving money?

    3. Hey guys! I honestly think just stocking up when the price is low on the Breeze pellets may be the best option. I buy them on Amazon straight from Tidy Cats. I have found nothing works the best like their own pellets. There is absolutely no odor at all from the litter box. I get the 7lb bags (pack of 4) for $45.99 or $11.49 a bag. Petsmart likes to sell one 7 lb bag for a whopping $17.49 which is ridiculous! One 7 lb bag will last almost 2 months (Sometimes I may have to take a tiny bit from a new bag on the second month depending on how much the cats pooped) with my two adult cats. So it costs me $5.74 a month for pellets (Think 3.5 lb bag size which is $9.49 at Petsmart) which is incredibly cheap for litter. I hope this all makes sense. Basically again, stocking up on Amazon is your best bet to get the best bang for your buck for quality.

    4. You must live in the states. We can pretty much only get them on Amazon.ca here and the price is horrible about $120.00. If I had known that I would have gotten a different system, but I am going to try some replacement products.

    5. I'm right there with you. I had the system in the States and it was so much cheaper to maintain than up here. I started using Pine litter pellets for mine (14lb bag for about $9 in BC) and it works decently well. I've found the pine pellets tend to fall apart when wet, but it's still less tracking than the clay litter I used before.

  7. Do you flush the Douglas fir pellets, or scoop and dump in the trash?

  8. Hi all..I also use a pine pellet product and it breaks down into sawdust when wet. So in the
Breeze box, I use All-Absorb pads on the bottom of the tray (40 pads for $14.99 on Chewy.com, and the pine pellets such as Feline Pine or MUCH (cheaper) equine pine bedding pellets, which is essentially the same thing (around $9.00 for a 40 lb bag). Every day I remove the poop into a plastic bag for disposal, and stir the pellets to send the broken down sawdust portion into the pad-lined tray below. For 2 cats, I dump and change the pads every other day. Some people use the sawdust as mulch, but I don't bother.

    1. Thanks for the comment! Everyone is different and could deal with different things. I think right now I am happy with changing the pad every week for my two cats. But I am glad to have your input of personal experience which will help others who come across this post. TY TY :D

    2. I am trying to understand the Breeze pellet alternative to save $$$. So it works to use a pine pellet for $9.00 40lb bag? That turns in to saw dust when hit with urine and falls below once you scoop and stir around the tray? I have been using Breeze since it came out. I have 4 in my house. It's very costly. I change pellets monthly. I wash the boxes in hot water and soap and scoopers and then go over everything with an alcohol wipe down on paper towels and never have noticed any odor problems. I just found the Peritas replacement pads on walmart.com for way cheaper. I can't find a cheaper solution to the pellets. Please advise if you have and it works.

  9. Safflower seeds- as used in the Smart Cat Box. Doesn't absorb fluids, spray with diluted bleach/water spray after scooping and throw out to the birds every few months. Can also be washed & dried for extended use. No dust, all natural, I love it!

    1. That is a new one for me, Sounds great! I am going to try that!!Thanks for the tip!!

    2. You feed to the birds after bleaching?? That is not healthy for the birds... please do NOT do this. Being pooped on birds would not eat - but I imagine that is safer to them than bleaching. Also, how do the seeds not fall through to the pads??

  10. I bought some walnut pellets online, maybe chewy.com. Definitely an online pet supply website. The walnut pellets are the same size and shape as the high dollar "real" ones. They dry out the urine so there is no smell. The only drawback is they are dark brown, close to the color of cat poop. I just use the little scooper that comes with the breeze set and scoop out the poop.
Also, I love the instructions for making your own pee pads. I can hardly wait to get started. Thanks!

  11. I thought pine stuff could have adverse reactions in cats? I don't want to clean up the mess they make anyway; but I believe I heard there are health concerns in using them with cats. Do the walnut pellets expand, or break down? Does the pee still go down to the pad? I use the Ultra Absorb pads on Amazon. They are 19.95 for 22 pads; and they have been the best value of the 8 brands I have tried.

  12. I was reading that Pinto or Navy beans would be a decent substitute for the pellets; considering how long it takes to soak beans just for eating, they wouldn't get mushy from being peed on a couple times a day!
I think I might try it.
maybe mix a few in with the regular pellets at first and gradually shift to 100% beans
